Hana Akai Owner and Master Stylist-Barber
I started my hair journey when I was in high school through a work experience placement at a hair salon and I haven’t looked back. I love what I do and truly enjoy the time I spend with my clients. Now with 20+ years’ experience, I am a master stylist-barber.
My formal training began at the London School of Hairdressing in Vancouver. I have pursued my hair passion and training in Japan, New York, Las Vegas, Seattle, Cuba and throughout California as well as locally throughout Vancouver Island. I’ve also trained with hair styling icon, Nick Arrojo, over a span of 9 years.
In Japan, I learned how extensive the training is for stylists, I learned many techniques not readily used in North America. In Cuba, I accompanied a barber who offered a mobile service, bringing his haircutting skills and straight razor shave to the client’s balcony. In Harlem, I worked in a bustling barber shop where the business was also a neighbourhood haven for social connection and support.
I am passionate about being involved in my community be it from charity fashion shows to offering haircuts at the homeless shelter. I support local causes such as the Victoria Family Violence Society, Victoria Women’s Transition House, to the Quadra Village Community Centre teen program. I also work with the community centre to have a day to offer free haircuts for children.
